My heritage

Today I returned for a visit
To the hills that I once called my home
I came back to see the old home place
But the buildings were torn down and gone
The buildings were torn down and gone

The old covered bridge was a shambles
Thanks to the progress of man
An interstate highway now windows thru the hill
Where peacefullness once ruled the land
Where peacefullness once ruled the land

As a lad I stood on the hilltop
And gazed at the valley below
The smoke from the shimney, a wild bird in flight
And the dust from the old gravel road
The dust from the old gravel road

The mocking bird sang in the evening
As twilight would cover the land
And the lonesome sound of the southbound freight
Chilled the heart of a ramblin' man
chilled the heart of a ramblin' man

Time can destroy many treasures
But the memory will still be the same
These things from the past will never come back
But my heritage long will remain
My heritage long will remain
